What are Syndication Tools?

If the first revolution in electronic publishing was making publishing platforms fully accessible, the next phase is the linking of these platforms together to produce new combinations and new types of content via turnkey syndication tools, such as IFTTT (If This, Then That). Especially beneficial for advertisers, today's syndication tools have gone social, allowing stakeholders to extend their campaigns to huge audiences across social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Modern syndication tools offer baked-in features that facilitate easy sharing of videos and posts by the viewer, as well as reporting data to indicate the reach and engagement level of the promoted content. With user friendly dissemination tools and services debuting on the market everyday, the power of individuals and organizations to spread messages, news, and advertisements to the public is easier, and more influential than ever.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • I don't view IFTTT a syndication tool. It is more like a virtual assistant to gather and disseminate data. I comments in the Virtual assistant area as well, and I think that this topic might be well suited to be merged with that one, as I think there is tremendous overlap in the technologies. - alex.podchaski alex.podchaski May 1, 2016

(2) What themes are missing from the above description that you think are important?

  • I think that limiting the perspective to the idea of cross-posting information on social platforms doesn't take the idea far enough. I can use tools like hootsuite, buffer, or postcron to post lots of information across different platforms. That is not the game changer in terms of syndication. It is the linking with being a virtual assistant that when I find certain types of information or collect certain things, I can automatically classify, index, archive, and share without having to worry about which tools I am using. I think this clearly falls into a virtual assistant type role, as opposed to just a new form of publishing, which is how I think this reads.- alex.podchaski alex.podchaski May 1, 2016

(3) What do you see as the potential impact of this technology on teaching, learning, or creative inquiry?

  • The linking together of tools is critical for the overall information processing needs of faculty, staff, and students in an educational environment. We need to think about the larger picture of why we are linking together the tools to achieve what purpose more than the fact that we can use tools to provide information, or even link them together. - alex.podchaski alex.podchaski May 1, 2016
